Grupptryck is a project aimed at promoting Swedish self-published magazines and zines; both digitally and through cultural programming. The project is initiated by the cultural association Tablå.
We look forward to welcoming editors and the public to the first edition of Grupptryck: Magazine and Zine Festival, taking place on May 17–18 at Hägerstensåsens medborgarhus. Explore the fair dedicated to Swedish self-published magazines and zines, tune in to a unique stage program, and get lost in the archival library showcasing Swedish cultural magazines through the ages.
Opening hours Saturday May 17: 12:00-19:00 Sunday May 18: 12:00-17:00
✷ Fair ↴
31 participating magazines and zines As part of the festival’s market, you’ll find some of the country’s most influential independent magazines. They document and explore themes ranging from literature, graffiti, music, and poetry to photography, art, and film — spanning everything from social theory to artistic practice.
3 participating bookstores Focusing on the rich archive of Swedish cultural magazines, the following bookstores will also take part in the festival’s fair.
In connection with the festival, the library at Hägerstensåsens medborgarhus will be transformed into a temporary archive, placing the ongoing movement of self-published magazines and zines in a historical context. Here you’ll find cultural and alternative magazines from the 1950s onward, which also serves as fascinating historical documents from the same period.
The archival library borrows its titles from Queerd zinebibliotek, Serieteket, and Filmform, among others. It features a wide range of historically significant titles and artistically intriguing formats. For those who wish to revisit the collection after the festival, large parts of the archive will remain for viewing and reading at Hägerstensåsens medborgarhus for an additional week until May 25.
✷ Stage Program ↴
During the festival weekend, visitors will also have the opportunity to tune in to a stage program with readings, lectures, and talks. Take a seat in the café with a coffee or snack, in good company with friends and your newly acquired magazines.
Saturday May 17th
14:00–14:30: Reading and Q&A with Jon from drömsyskon drömsyskon is a zine by and for trans people of all genders and non-genders. The zine shares trans people’s histories and experiences and functions as a platform for collective self representation and creativity. As a part of the festival’s stage program, one of its editors Jon will read poetry published in the zine – followed by a Q&A led by Moa from Tablå.
15:30–16:30: What does a fanzine sound like? DJ set with Jazz Är Farligt Since 2011, music journalist and curator Elena Wolay has run the platform Jazz Är Farligt (”Jazz Is Dangerous”), which includes a fanzine, live series, and, until 2016, a festival of the same name. The fanzine is best described as a jazz rag and has to date published eight issues – with contributions from Marja-Leena Sillanpää, Stina Berge, Jockum Nordström, Jean-Louis Huhta, and Lena Ackebo, among others. During this hour, Elena Wolay will play the music that has inspired Jazz Är Farligt and share her process in making the zine throughout the years, in conversation with writer Nathan Hamelberg.
Wolay has been described as one of the driving forces in Sweden’s alternative music scene. She currently works as a music and literature grants administrator for the City of Malmö and as a music archivist for the Moki and Don Cherry archive. Her recent curatorial projects include Sun Ra at Mellanrummet, Malmö Konsthall (2021), Åke Hodell, Malmö Konsthall (2022), and Åke Hodell: 220 Volt Buddha, Kalmar Konstmuseum (2022). In 2022, Elena Wolay participated with her fanzines in the group exhibition “File Under Freedom” at Bergen Kunsthall and served as curator of the music program at Uppsala Art Museum in both 2022 and 2023.
Sunday May 18th
14:00–14:30: The teaches of Art-Rite with Natasha Marie Llorens (ENG) Natasha Marie Llorens shares her work on the Art-Rite bootleg zine series (2020-2023), a curatorial project made in collaboration with graphic designer Martin Groch. As a Professor of Art Theory and the History of Ideas, Llorens created the zine to address widespread resistance to theory in art students at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm.
The bootleg draws its inspiration from the original Art-Rite – a trailblazing arts magazine published in New York between 1973-1978. A recent facsimile edition by Primary Information (which will also be available to look through at the festival) characterizes the magazine as ”celebrated for its underground/overground position and its cutting, humorous, on-the-streets coverage and critique of the art world.”
In Llorens’ bootleg, key art theoretical texts were reprinted with annotations; each issue featured a unique cover design and were printed weekly on Riso and Xerox for the duration of the course MA Seminar in Art Theory. The zines were available for free at the entrance of the school. The project also included work from New York-based painter Sophy Naess and German comic artist Anna Haifisch.
Copies of the zine will be available for free on-site. Please note that the talk will be held in English.
15:30–15:45: A Commented Visual Journey through OEI #106–107: Lettrists & Photography Lettrists & Photography is the first major presentation of Lettrist photography. This issue traces the Lettrists’ interventions and innovations in photography from the 1950s through to 2013, across three extensive chapters written by Frédéric Acquaviva. In this 336-page issue of OEI, approximately 430 photographic works and documents are reproduced, along with English translations of texts by, and interviews with, Isidore Isou, Maurice Lemaître, and Frédérique Devaux.
During the festival, a choir of magazines fronting some of these works will also be on display at Medborgarhuset. The program will be presented by OEI editors Jonas (J) Magnusson and Cecilia Grönberg.
